How are Stem Cells collected?

The stem cells are collected from blood contained in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby has been born.

How are Stem Cells stored?

The cord blood stem cell units are stored below –180°C in the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen. Technically speaking, this is known as cryopreservation.

In the UK there are strict regulations on the storage of cord blood stem cells. These regulations are currently overseen by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA). In addition, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has run a voluntary accreditation scheme.

The Virgin Health Bank storage facility strictly follows all regulations and best practice.

Accredited and Licensed.

The Virgin Group, and in particular Virgin Health Bank, is renowned worldwide for innovative ideas and making the seemingly impossible – possible.

The concept of Stem Cell Collection is now a reality and the benefits to the population, both now and in the future, are well documented.

The procedure for harvesting Core Stem Cells from the umbilical is both straightforward and harmless to the mother and newborn child.

Routes Healthcare is proud to support Stem Cell Collection and is equally proud of our relationship with Virgin Health Bank.

For details of Stem Cell Collection and answers to the most frequently asked questions please visit www.virginhealthbank.com.

There may be occasions when the hospital where the child is born is unable to assist with the collection of the core stem cells. In the event that your chosen hospital for delivery is unable to assist, then Routes Healthcare can help.

Routes is an established, licensed provider of Healthcare Professionals that is experienced in providing trained personnel, through private arrangements, to collect the Core Stem Cells at the time of birth.

We ensure that the professional allocated to you makes contact before your baby is born. Our staff will be on-call 24 hours a day exclusively for you, from the point of introduction to the point of Stem Cell Collection. When the all-important time comes, our personnel will travel to the hospital where your baby is to be delivered. They will take the collection kit from you, harvest the Stem Cells and ensure they are sent to the Virgin Health Bank Laboratory. Our personnel are fully briefed and appreciate the importance of the collection.

You can contact us at anytime once you have registered with Virgin Health Bank. We will then make arrangements for you to be introduced to the Nurse or Healthcare Professional who will be with you at the time of delivery to collect the Stem Cells. This will help you feel at ease with the process and more confident of the outcome.

Routes Healthcare charge £100.00 plus VAT for the provision of a member of personnel to carry out the procedure. Payment is made after the collection is completed. The only additional charge is 43p per mile from the point of departure to the point of collection and the return journey.

Please visit the Virgin Health Bank website and feel free to contact any member of their team who will be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you through the registration process.

Stem Cell
Collection and Storage

What are Stem Cells?

Quite simply, stem cells are very early cells, blank cells if you like, that can develop into almost all other types of cell and tissue.

What do Stem Cells do?

Stem cells divide themselves many times to make new stem cells. They can also transform into specific cells needed by the body to heal itself.

Scientists already know how transplanted cells can be used to treat some illnesses – they're used today, mainly in allogeneic transplants, to fight various blood disorders, such as leukaemia. That's why health care professionals support public cord blood banks – they provide an opportunity for patients to find donated stem cells that match their own, just as you would with a blood type for transfusion.
