Donations to Rochdale Foodbank | Routing For Our Community

Care isn't something we switch off at the end of a visit. It's part of who we are as a team — and that extends into the communities we work in every day.

Recently, we were pleased to support Rochdale Foodbank with a donation of food and toiletries, collected by our team here at the Rochdale office. Debbie from the foodbank came to collect the donation directly — a boot-full of essentials that will go straight to local people who need it most.

Rochdale Foodbank was founded in 2012 by local churches and community groups, with a simple mission: to stop hunger in the local area. The need right now is real.

We make donations periodically throughout the year — sometimes via a collection point in our office, sometimes by purchasing specific items the foodbank has flagged as most needed. We're pleased to share some exciting news: Routes Healthcare has acquired Just A Little Company (Care and Support at Home) Ltd, a trusted care provider based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

This marks our first step into the East Midlands, and we couldn't be more excited to bring our expertise and support to communities across Derbyshire.

Just A Little Company has been providing quality home care and complex care in Chesterfield for 10 years, building strong relationships with clients, families, and the local community. Our incredible Blackpool carer, Sarah Taylor, has been named as a finalist for "Domiciliary Carer of the Year" at the National Care Awards 2025!

Sarah was named as a Heart of our Home following the incredible lengths she went to for a client in need. When we heard about her life-saving actions, we knew she deserved much wider recognition, so we nominated her for the National Care Awards 2025. We're absolutely thrilled she's been named a finalist!

Life-Saving CPR During a Home Care Visit

During a routine visit, Sarah discovered a client who had become unresponsive. Sarah remained calm, followed emergency protocols, and when the client's breathing became dangerously shallow, she performed three full rounds of CPR under dispatcher guidance.

This extraordinary moment revealed Sarah's true character - her ability to stay composed under pressure, her thorough training, and her genuine care for the people she supports.

Sarah's quick-thinking and professional response directly saved her client's life

When she's not saving our clients' lives, Sarah makes such a special impact on their days. Her clients regularly tell us how much they look forward to her visits. She brings warmth and positivity to each interaction, understanding that for many clients, her visit is the highlight of their day.

Sarah takes time to really listen. She remembers the little things that matter to each person - their preferences, their stories, their concerns. It's this authentic connection that transforms a care visit into something truly meaningful.

On Friday, our Blackpool team threw Sarah a special celebration party, presenting her with a "Finalist 2025" sash. Sarah proudly wore this sash throughout her entire day, visiting her clients who were absolutely delighted to see it. Her clients' faces lit up with pride for Sarah - sharing in her joy and excitement about this incredible recognition.

It was heartwarming to see the genuine connections Sarah has built. All of her clients and our entire team are 'routing' for Sarah in the National Care Awards!

This year, Springhill Hospice is our Rochdale Charity of the Year as part of our Routing for Change initiative. It's not just about fundraising - it's about supporting an organisation whose values mirror our own.

Every day, Springhill's team helps families navigate some of life's most difficult moments. They provide comfort, dignity, and specialist care when it's needed most. That's something we understand deeply in our work.

This is what Routing for Change is all about - supporting the causes that matter in our local community. The whole team is really excited about this challenge and everyone's already been coming forward with ideas for fundraising. Emergency Alerts is a UK government system that provides warning and advice in life threatening emergencies such as severe flooding, wildfires, and extreme storms.

What happens when I receive the test alert?

At 3pm on Sunday 7 September, most mobile phones in the UK will receive a test alert. Your mobile phone or tablet will:

make a loud siren-like sound, even if it's set on silent
vibrate
read out the alert

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds.

You'll get alerts based on your current location. The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send alerts.

How will I be sent an emergency alert?

Emergency alerts are sent automatically to most modern 4G and 5G mobile phones
No signup is needed, and you do not need to provide a phone number
The alert is based on your current location
Only government or emergency services can send these alerts

Should I be worried about the test?

No—there's nothing to worry about. The test is not a real emergency and you don't need to do anything
The message and loud noise may be startling, especially if unexpected. If you know someone who might be affected—such as someone with hearing difficulties, anxiety, or memory problems—please let them know in advance
If you receive care from Routes Healthcare, our care team will be aware of the test and ready to provide reassurance if needed
The system has been successfully tested before and used in real emergencies to help keep communities safe

Do I have to receive these emergency alerts?

The alert system is intended to help keep people safe in a national or local emergency
However, you can turn off the alerts if you wish—this might be relevant for individuals who have a second, hidden phone for safety reasons
To turn off alerts:
- Apple iPhones: Go to Settings > Notifications > Emergency Alerts
- Android phones: Go to Settings > Safety & Emergency (or Sound & Vibration, or Cell Broadcasts) > Emergency Alerts

Welcome Home Soon for Baby Mohammed

Our Burnley team member Abdul and his wife welcomed their precious son Mohammed in February - born at just 1lb when doctors weren't sure he'd make it.

Through months of daily hospital visits, Abdul never missed a day with us whilst supporting his family through their biggest challenge. Today, baby Mohammed weighs a healthy 12lb and is coming home soon!

When the team surprised Abdul with a baby basket and a golden ticket for paid time off on Mohammed's first day home, the gratitude in the room was overwhelming. As Sharon, our Head of Homecare, beautifully said: "Seeing Abdul's gratitude and knowing that we really do care - we couldn't put that feeling into words."
